## Moving and settling in

Whether to move, where to live, finding a rental and your rights as a tenant.

**Should I move to Prince George?**

It depends on what you want: lower housing costs than the south coast, a strong job market in health, education, forestry and trades, and big outdoors, against long cold winters, a pulp-mill smell on some days and a higher crime rate than the BC average.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/should-i-move/) [Moving to Prince George: the numbers](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/move/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=Should%20I%20move%20to%20Prince%20George%3F)

**I just moved here. What do I need to do first?**

Enrol in MSP right away, set up BC Hydro, FortisBC and your City utility account, find your garbage day, sign up for emergency alerts, register for a family doctor, then switch your driver’s licence at ICBC within 90 days.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/newcomer-essentials/) [Newcomers and students: first weeks](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/move/newcomers/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=I%20just%20moved%20here.%20What%20do%20I%20need%20to%20do%20first%3F)

**Which neighbourhood should I live in, and which areas are safe?**

Compare the City’s 31 neighbourhoods on our neighbourhood pages: each shows its boundary, reported property crime for the last 12 months, bus routes and businesses. College Heights, the Hart and the plateau areas are suburban; downtown and the older central areas are walkable but report the most property crime.

**How do I find a rental in Prince George?**

Use the online listing sites, local property managers and, for subsidized housing, the BC Housing registry. The vacancy rate shows how tight it is; start looking early, especially before September when students arrive.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/finding-a-rental/) [Housing dashboard: rents and vacancy](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/dashboard/housing/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=How%20do%20I%20find%20a%20rental%20in%20Prince%20George%3F)

**Where can I find a pet-friendly rental?**

Filter listing sites for pets allowed and ask property managers directly. In BC a landlord may refuse pets, but if they allow one they can charge a pet damage deposit of at most half a month’s rent.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/pet-friendly-rentals/) [Property managers](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/directory/c/real-estate/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=Where%20can%20I%20find%20a%20pet-friendly%20rental%3F)

**My landlord is giving me trouble. What are my rights?**

Residential tenancies in BC are governed by the Residential Tenancy Act. The Residential Tenancy Branch explains the rules and resolves disputes; TRAC and Legal Aid BC give free advice.

## Home, utilities and services

Power, gas, water, internet, garbage and what they cost.

**What do utilities cost in a Prince George winter?**

Electricity is BC Hydro (two-step residential rate), natural gas is FortisBC, and water, sewer and garbage are billed by the City. Heating is the big winter cost; our household cost calculator puts the current rates together.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/utility-costs/) [Household cost calculator](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/tools/household-costs/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=What%20do%20utilities%20cost%20in%20a%20Prince%20George%20winter%3F)

**Which internet providers are available, and which is best?**

Availability depends on your street. Our internet provider comparison uses the federal National Broadband Data to show which providers and technologies (fibre, cable, fixed wireless) serve each part of the city, with their advertised speeds.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/internet-providers/) [Internet providers by area](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/tools/internet/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=Which%20internet%20providers%20are%20available%2C%20and%20which%20is%20best%3F)

**The power is out. When is it coming back?**

Check BC Hydro’s outage map for your street and its estimated restoration time; our power dashboard shows outages within about 150 km live, with the history.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/power-outages/) [Power outages, live](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/dashboard/power/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=The%20power%20is%20out.%20When%20is%20it%20coming%20back%3F)

**Why is my water brown or tasting odd? Is the water safe?**

Discoloured water usually follows hydrant flushing, a main break or high demand that stirs up sediment; run the cold tap until it clears and report it to the City if it does not. The City tests the water many times a month and publishes an annual water report.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/water-quality/) [Water and sewer guide](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/city/water-and-sewer/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=Why%20is%20my%20water%20brown%20or%20tasting%20odd%3F%20Is%20the%20water%20safe%3F)

**When is my garbage day, and what can I recycle?**

Enter your address in our garbage day tool for your next pickups. Curbside recycling follows Recycle BC’s list; glass, film plastic and foam go to depots, not your cart.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/garbage-recycling/) [Garbage day lookup](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/tools/garbage-day/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=When%20is%20my%20garbage%20day%2C%20and%20what%20can%20I%20recycle%3F)

## Health care

Family doctors, walk-in care, dentists and the hospital.

**How do I find a family doctor or a walk-in clinic?**

Register on the Health Connect Registry (online or 8-1-1) to be matched with a family doctor or nurse practitioner. Until then, use the Urgent and Primary Care Centre, walk-in clinics, or call 8-1-1 for nurse advice.

**How do I find a dentist, optometrist, physiotherapist or counsellor?**

Browse the directory categories for each trade, check that the person is registered with their regulatory college, and ask whether they take new patients and direct-bill your insurer.

## Finding a good business

Mechanics, trades, barbers, restaurants and where to buy things.

**How do I find a reputable mechanic or auto body shop?**

Start with the directory’s auto repair and auto body categories, ask for a written estimate before work starts, and for collision repairs paid by ICBC check that the shop works with ICBC.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/mechanics/) [Auto repair](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/directory/c/auto-repair/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=How%20do%20I%20find%20a%20reputable%20mechanic%20or%20auto%20body%20shop%3F)

**How do I find a good contractor, plumber or electrician?**

Use the directory’s trade categories, get two or three written quotes, and check licences: Technical Safety BC licenses electrical and gas contractors, BC Housing licenses residential builders, and WorkSafeBC issues clearance letters.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/trades-contractors/) [Builders and renovators](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/directory/c/builders/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=How%20do%20I%20find%20a%20good%20contractor%2C%20plumber%20or%20electrician%3F)

**Where can I find a good barber, stylist, esthetician or tattoo artist?**

Browse the directory’s hair, spa and esthetics, and tattoo categories, look at portfolios on each business’s own pages, and check the PG Pulse Awards for residents’ favourites.

**Where should I eat? I want something specific.**

Our food guide lists every restaurant, café and bakery in the directory by cuisine, with what is open late. Search for a dish or cuisine, and see the awards for residents’ picks.

**Is that restaurant closed? Where are health inspection results?**

New businesses show up on our new-in-town page from City business licences; closures are reported in the news and marked in the directory. Northern Health inspects restaurants and takes food safety complaints.

**Where can I buy something specific in town?**

Search the directory for the product or the kind of shop: it covers about every licensed business in the city, with links to their own sites. Ask the assistant if you are not sure which kind of store sells it.

## Winter, weather and air

Winter driving and living, the mill smell, smoke and air advisories.

**Do I need winter tires or a block heater?**

Winter tires (mountain snowflake or M+S) are required on most highways around Prince George from October 1 to April 30, and they are strongly advised in town. A block heater is not required, but on the coldest days it makes starting easier and saves wear.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/winter-tires/) [Snow and roads guide](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/city/snow-and-roads/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=Do%20I%20need%20winter%20tires%20or%20a%20block%20heater%3F)

**How bad is winter, and how do people cope?**

Winters are long and cold: most snow falls from November to March, snow usually covers the ground from December to March, and December days are short. People cope with good boots and layers, indoor walking spots, and winter sports: cross-country skiing, skating and the local ski hills.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/surviving-winter/) [Climate](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/dashboard/climate/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=How%20bad%20is%20winter%2C%20and%20how%20do%20people%20cope%3F)

**What is that smell, and which areas get it?**

It is mostly reduced sulphur compounds from the city’s kraft pulp mills. It is strongest when the air is still or during an inversion, and drifts wherever the light wind blows.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/mill-smell/) [Air quality dashboard](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/dashboard/air-quality/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=What%20is%20that%20smell%2C%20and%20which%20areas%20get%20it%3F)

**Where is the smoke coming from, and why are there air advisories in winter?**

Summer smoke usually comes from wildfires, sometimes hundreds of kilometres away; our wildfire dashboard shows fires and the smoke forecast. Winter and early-spring advisories come from temperature inversions that trap smoke, exhaust and road dust in the valley.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/smoke-air-advisories/) [Air quality dashboard](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/dashboard/air-quality/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=Where%20is%20the%20smoke%20coming%20from%2C%20and%20why%20are%20there%20air%20advisories%20in%20winter%3F)

## Safety and what is going on

Sirens, crime, outages and wildlife in the neighbourhood.

**Sirens, police or a helicopter: what is going on?**

Check our live dashboard (road events, outages, fires, weather alerts) and the latest local news. Police and fire publish news releases after the fact; for an emergency call 9-1-1, otherwise the RCMP non-emergency line.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/whats-going-on/) [Live dashboard](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/dashboard/live/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=Sirens%2C%20police%20or%20a%20helicopter%3A%20what%20is%20going%20on%3F)

**Is Prince George dangerous? Why is the crime rate high?**

Prince George’s crime severity index is well above the BC average, driven mostly by property crime and concentrated in a few areas. Our safety dashboard shows the trend since 2000 and reported property crime by neighbourhood.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/crime-and-safety/) [Safety dashboard and crime map](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/dashboard/safety/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=Is%20Prince%20George%20dangerous%3F%20Why%20is%20the%20crime%20rate%20high%3F)

## City hall and politics

Elections, council decisions, taxes, downtown and big projects.

**Will downtown ever get better?**

Downtown has new housing, City projects and businesses opening alongside vacancies, fires and social issues. Follow it with numbers: permits and projects on our development tracker, property crime on the downtown page, and council decisions.

**Who is running in the election, and how do I vote?**

The municipal election is October 17, 2026 (mayor, council, school trustees and regional district areas) and the provincial election is October 24, 2026. Our election guide lists the candidates, voting places and how to vote.

**What is council deciding, and where does my tax money go?**

Council meets in public (agendas, minutes and video online); our civic pages explain how it works, our bylaw index lists every bylaw, and the spending pages show payments to suppliers, grants, contracts and council pay from the City’s open data.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/council-taxes-transparency/) [How the City budget works](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/civic/city-budget-and-taxes/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=What%20is%20council%20deciding%2C%20and%20where%20does%20my%20tax%20money%20go%3F)

**What is happening with the big projects (arena, performing arts centre, hospital, grocery stores)?**

Our development tracker shows building permits, rezonings and planning applications as the City files them; council decisions are in the civic news and meeting minutes. Big public projects have their own pages on the City’s engagement site.

[Full answer and sources](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/answers/big-projects/) [Development tracker](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/development/) [Ask a follow-up](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/ask/?q=What%20is%20happening%20with%20the%20big%20projects%20(arena%2C%20performing%20arts%20centre%2C%20hospital%2C%20grocery%20stores)%3F)

## Work, school and child care

The job market, UNBC and CNC, daycare and schools.

**Why is it hard to get a job here? Where are the jobs?**

Our jobs page collects open postings from dozens of employers and job boards, with 782 open now. Health care, education, the trades, transportation and public service hire most; WorkBC helps with résumés and training for free.

**UNBC or CNC? And where do students live?**

UNBC is the university (degrees, graduate programs, medicine with UBC); CNC is the college (diplomas, trades, university transfer, health programs). Both have campus housing; off campus, students look for places on a direct bus route to campus.

## Getting around

Buses, taxis, the airport, road tests and tricky intersections.

**How good are the buses, taxis and the airport?**

Prince George Transit (BC Transit) runs city routes with real-time bus tracking; taxis and a ride-share app operate; the airport (YXS) has daily flights to Vancouver and more. Our next-bus tool shows live departures.

**Where do I do a road test, and which intersections are bad?**

Road tests are booked with ICBC and taken at the Prince George driver licensing office. For roads, DriveBC shows highway events and our road closures page shows City closures; ICBC publishes crash data by intersection.
