# Why is my water brown or tasting odd? Is the water safe?

Discoloured water usually follows hydrant flushing, a main break or high demand that stirs up sediment; run the cold tap until it clears and report it to the City if it does not. The City tests the water many times a month and publishes an annual water report.

Checked October 1, 2026. Numbers update on their own.

Prince George gets its drinking water from wells near the rivers, and the City reports on quality every year. Brown or cloudy water is usually iron and manganese sediment stirred up in the mains. Run cold water for a few minutes, avoid doing laundry until it clears, and call 311 (250-561-7600 from outside the city) if it persists. Boil water notices are posted by the City and on our emergency page.
