## At a glance

- handyDART provides door-to-door accessible transit. Registration is free and a ride costs $2.75.
- Transit is free for riders 65+ with ID on October 1 each year (National Seniors Day).
- The City’s Set Out/Set Back program helps residents with permanent disabilities get their garbage cart to the curb.
- Seniors can reduce or defer property taxes through the provincial home owner grant and tax deferment program.
- Report an accessibility barrier to 311 and include the word ‘accessibility’.

This guide pulls together the local services most useful to older adults, people with disabilities, and the families and caregivers who support them.

## Getting around

### handyDART

**handyDART** is BC Transit’s **door-to-door, shared ride** service for people with a permanent or temporary disability that prevents them from using regular buses without help.

1. **Register** with BC Transit. It’s free.
2. **Book** rides in advance, or set up **subscription** trips for regular appointments.
3. **Pay** a regular fare ($2.75). An **attendant rides free**.

### Regular buses

All Prince George buses have ramps and priority seating, but wheelchairs and scooters can only board and exit at **accessible stops** (marked with a blue-and-white accessibility decal). BC Transit offers free **travel training** to help new riders get comfortable.

### Transit discounts

- **30-day concession pass** for seniors 65+: $55 (versus $65 for adults).
- **Free on October 1**, National Seniors Day, for riders 65+ with ID.
- **BC Bus Pass**: a low-cost annual pass for eligible low-income seniors and people receiving provincial disability assistance.

See [transit](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/city/transit/).

### Parking

Accessible parking stalls are at City facilities, including the Canfor Leisure Pool and the library’s underground lot. Accessible parking permits are issued by provincial disability organizations, not the City.

## Around the house

- **Garbage carts:** the **Set Out/Set Back** program has City crews move your cart to the curb and back if a permanent physical disability makes it hard to do without another person’s help. See [garbage and recycling](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/city/garbage-and-recycling/).
- **Property tax relief:**
  - The provincial **home owner grant** includes an **additional amount for seniors 65+**, veterans and people with disabilities. Apply through the Province.
  - The **property tax deferment program** lets eligible homeowners 55+ defer their annual property taxes through a low-interest provincial loan.
  - See [property taxes and utilities](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/city/property-taxes-and-utilities/).
- **Accessible housing:** the City publishes **adaptable** and **visitable** housing checklists for builders and renovators. See [housing and development](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/city/housing-and-development/).
- **Snow:** if a fire hydrant or utility box near your home is buried, call 311. For help shovelling, ask your community association or neighbours. The City doesn’t clear private walkways.

## Recreation

The **Canfor Leisure Pool** was designed to be fully accessible. It has water elevators, water-ready wheelchairs and walkers, a powered lift and adjustable change bed, Braille and tactile signage, and wide ramps. Other features:

- **Seniors 60+** pay the reduced rate ($6.69 drop-in in 2026).
- A **caregiver** who gives hands-on support gets in free.
- **Sensory-friendly swims** have quieter sound and dimmer lighting.
- Low-income seniors on the **BC Seniors Supplement** may qualify for the **Leisure Access Program**: 52 free swims a year, and 75% off passes and programs.

See [recreation centres and pools](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/city/recreation-centres-and-pools/).

## Library

- **Home Service:** volunteers deliver books, audiobooks, large print and DVDs to cardholders who can’t easily get to a branch. It’s available in the Bowl, Hart Highlands and College Heights. Call 250-563-9251 ext. 123.
- **Large print, DAISY players** and other accessible formats.
- **Tech help** sessions and programs for seniors.

See [libraries](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/city/libraries/).

## Health and care

- **8-1-1** connects you with a nurse, pharmacist or dietitian 24/7.
- **Home and community care** through Northern Health covers home support, nursing, assisted living and long-term care. Access usually starts with an assessment.
- Long-term care and assisted living homes in Prince George include Gateway Lodge, Jubilee Lodge, Parkside Care, Rainbow Lodge, Simon Fraser Lodge, Laurier Manor and Birchview Residences.

See [health care](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/city/health-care/).

## Voting

All City voting places are **accessible**. For the October 17, 2026 municipal election:

- **Curbside voting** is available at the Conference and Civic Centre on all advance days and on general voting day.
- A **ballot-marking device** with enhanced audio and visual options, a Braille keypad and sip-and-puff controls is available at the Civic Centre.
- You can bring a helper, or ask an election official to assist.
- **Mail ballots** are open to all eligible voters. Apply by 4:30 p.m. on October 15.

See [election 2026](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/civic/election-2026/).

## Reporting barriers

The City has an **Accessibility and Inclusion Work Plan** and an **Advisory Committee on Accessibility and Inclusion**, as required by the Accessible British Columbia Act. To report a barrier or comment on the plan:

- Email **[311@princegeorge.ca](mailto:311@princegeorge.ca)** or call **250-561-7600**
- Use the **cityofpg** app
- Write to 1100 Patricia Boulevard

**Include the word “accessibility”** so it’s routed to the right team.

## Staying safe

- Sign up for **emergency alerts**. During an evacuation, people with mobility issues are picked up by door-to-door crews. See [emergency services and alerts](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/city/emergency-services-and-alerts/).
- **Scam warning:** the City never phones or texts asking for banking details, your SIN or passwords.
