## Who’s running in 2026

The City’s Chief Election Officer declared on September 21, 2026 that votes will be held for both mayor and council:

- **Mayor (one to be elected), 9 candidates:** Ernesto Caranto, Marc Carrier, Randy Danchuk, Garth Frizzell, Keenan Murphy, Zachariah Olson, Kyle Sampson, Roy Stewart and Simon Yu.
- **Councillor (eight to be elected), 18 candidates:** Tim Bennett, Shawn Bortolon, Nicole Fraser, Jesi Janjua, Trudy Klassen, Tucker Krause, Trenten Laarz, Dan McLaren, Anthony Okechukwu, Rajendar Parmar, Dan Pears, Ron Polillo, Bob Radloff, Cori Ramsay, Brian Skakun, James Steidle, Bruce Wayne and John Zukowski.

Names are listed alphabetically as in the official declaration. Candidates can choose to publish their contact details and platforms on **CivicInfo BC’s localelections.ca**. PG Pulse doesn’t endorse candidates.

## How council is set up

- **Size:** a mayor plus eight councillors.
- **Elected at large:** Prince George has no wards, so every voter picks one mayor and up to eight councillors.
- **Term:** four years, elected on the third Saturday of October.
- **The mayor** chairs council meetings, is the City’s chief spokesperson, and has one vote like every councillor.
- **Council acts as a group.** Individual members can’t direct staff. Decisions are made by majority vote at a properly called meeting.
- **The City Manager** leads City staff and carries out council’s decisions.

## What council decides

- the annual **budget** and **property tax** rates (see [city budget and taxes](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/civic/city-budget-and-taxes/))
- **bylaws**, from zoning to animal control to parking
- **land use**: rezonings, the Official Community Plan, development and variance permits (see [housing and development](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/city/housing-and-development/))
- **strategic priorities**, set out in the 2023–2026 Strategic Plan and the corporate work plan
- **appointments** to committees and boards, such as the library board
- **advocacy** to the provincial and federal governments

What council **doesn’t** control: schools (the SD57 board), hospitals and health care (Northern Health and the Province), provincial highways, and most social services. See [provincial and federal representatives](https://princegeorgepulse.ca/civic/provincial-and-federal-representatives/).
