Fall comes quickly in Prince George. One week the evenings are still warm enough for the patio; the next, frost silvers the lawns and the aspens on Cranbrook Hill turn gold. It is a short, beautiful season, and a busy one. Here is what to look forward to between now and the first real snow.

We have kept this guide general. For exact dates, times and tickets, always check with organizers or Tourism Prince George’s events calendar.

Get outside while the colour lasts

Late September into early October is usually peak fall colour, when trembling aspen, paper birch and black cottonwood turn yellow against the dark spruce. September averages a comfortable 17°C high at the airport, while October drops to about 9°C, so the window for colour and comfortable hiking is short.

Favourite fall walks:

  • Forests for the World on Cranbrook Hill, for colour and the best view of the city.
  • Cottonwood Island Park and the Heritage River Trail, where the big cottonwoods glow gold. See Five walks along the rivers.
  • Ferguson Lake Nature Reserve, an easy 2.5 km loop north of town with waterfowl stopping over on migration.
  • Moore’s Meadow, where the open meadow is especially pretty in autumn light.

More ideas in parks and trails. Bears are busy fattening up in fall, so make noise and keep dogs leashed.

Watch the migration

Fall migration brings waves of geese, ducks and songbirds through the river valleys. For a spectacle, drive an hour west to Vanderhoof, whose Nechako River bird sanctuary is a stopover for thousands of Canada geese. Closer to home, the Hudson’s Bay Wetland is a good spot to bring binoculars. See day trips.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In Prince George, it is a day to learn about the history of residential schools and to honour survivors, and community gatherings and walks are typically held with and by the Lheidli T’enneh and other Indigenous organizations. Wear orange, attend a public event and take time to read about the Lheidli T’enneh, on whose territory the city stands.

Hockey is back

Fall means the rinks come alive.

  • The Prince George Cougars open their WHL season in the fall at the CN Centre.
  • The Prince George Spruce Kings play BCHL hockey at Kopar Memorial Arena.
  • UNBC Timberwolves basketball and soccer, minor hockey, figure skating and curling leagues all get underway.

A new arts season

Autumn is when the city’s cultural calendar fills up:

  • Theatre NorthWest launches its new season of mainstage productions.
  • The Prince George Symphony Orchestra begins its concert series.
  • Two Rivers Gallery rotates new exhibitions and fall classes.
  • The Exploration Place runs programs for kids and families.
  • The Prince George Playhouse hosts community and touring shows.

Harvest season

Farm stands and the downtown farmers’ market are at their most abundant in September and early October: potatoes, carrots, squash, apples from farther south, preserves and baking. Thanksgiving weekend falls in mid-October. For eating out, browse the restaurant and café directories.

Vote twice this October

Prince George residents elect a mayor, council and school trustees this fall, with general voting day on Saturday, October 17, 2026. One week later, on Saturday, October 24, 2026, BC holds a provincial election, run separately by Elections BC. Buses are free on both general voting days. Our civic guide explains how and where to vote: Election 2026 in Prince George.

When the weather turns

Fall brings the first cold rain and early dark evenings. Rainy-day favourites include VR and retro arcade games at All Around Gamerz, escape rooms, bowling, climbing at OVERhang and The Exploration Place. The Canfor Leisure Pool is the City’s open pool while the Aquatic Centre is renovated. See the indoor ideas in things to do in Prince George.

Look up: northern lights

The weeks around the fall equinox are often good for auroras. On a clear, dark night, head away from city lights and look north. You do not need to go far from town.

Get ready for winter

Fall is also prep season:

  • Winter tires are required on most highways around Prince George from October 1.
  • Book a furnace check, clean the gutters and find the block heater cord.
  • Nordic skiers and snowboarders start buying passes and waxing gear for Otway and Tabor Mountain.
  • The first lasting snow usually arrives in November. See winter activities.

Keep an eye on the forecast

Fall weather changes fast, from sunny 20°C days to an early snowfall within a week. Check the weather dashboard, and compare this fall with the long-term record on the climate dashboard. Heavy autumn rain can also raise river levels; the rivers dashboard has current readings.

Enjoy the season. It goes by quickly.
